In Memory of Lorraine

By Jeff Hunt

In memory of Lorraine.

It was two weeks before Christmas in 2021, and Loz was living her best life. She was in the pocket. Her little girls were in primary school and thriving, her corporate career was going strong, and we’d just finished building our home. As we walked to get Santa Christmas photos with the girls, she felt a tremor on her right side, and as the day wore on, she didn’t feel great. Her right side felt heavy, so she went to the ER. The scan they ran delivered a stunning and devastating diagnosis, a brain tumour that would turn out to be GBM. A Grade 4 Glioblastoma, the most aggressive and deadly kind. A seismic earthquake not only in Loz’s life, but everyone that loved her. Loz was not only an integral part of our family unit with me and our girls. She was the sun, the light and warmth in her wider family, a loving and committed daughter, sister, cousin and friend.

When everything falls away, when faced with the psychic, spiritual, emotional and physical burden of such a critical diagnosis and the brutality of the ensuing treatments – the surgeries, the chemo, and radiotherapies, the deep anxiety and shadow of every approaching scan; Loz’s defining qualities, that drew people to her and made her such an authentic and vital sparkle, were made even more apparent. She never put energy into self-pity and asked “why me?”, instead she faced everything that came with incredible courage and grace. She wanted to preserve her children’s innocence and sense of safety in the world and kept her diagnosis as far from them as possible, to ensure their carefree childhood would be untouched for as long as she possibly could.

For a short time, the surgery and treatments seemed to keep the GBM stable, and Loz and we all were so so grateful for that. But Loz was living in penalty time – that small window where you’re lulled into the potential possibility of beating the odds.  She had already become a statistical anomaly by living past the 18 month mark. But now, 2 years later, reoccurrence came with a crushing force and slowly but surely stripped away her precious independence. This was one of the things that hurt her the most. Hurt her because it compromised her quality time with her girls, her ability to drive them places and do things with them, to be a physically active part of their lives, instead of slowly forced to become a bystander.

Despite this, through it all, the tragedy of GBM couldn’t take any of Loz’s beauty and goodness. It drew her closer to her faith in God, and only highlighted Loz’s incredible sweetness, dignity, strength, and tenacity. Her loving nature, her care for those around her never stalled or wavered. Always her thoughtfulness and incredible generosity was for others, not herself. Loz finally succumbed in August 2026, with our girls in Year 8 and Year 9. We’re lucky they’ll never forget her.

The impact of Loz, our precious, shiny shiny girl goes deep. She leaves a legacy of love that’s etched and burned into our hearts forever.  In donating to brain cancer research in Loz’s memory, we hope that one day, someone diagnosed with GBM gets a second chance at life with a cure.
